THE NILE EGYPTIANS

In December of 2003 we finally got to take a long awaited holiday.......to Egypt...

Flying in over Cairo and seeing the pyramids at Gizah from the air is a moment I will long remember. The whole trip was a fabulous experience and a lot of fun leaving us some wonderful memories - memories of the country, the people, the desert - and of course the eternal Nile! There in Upper Egypt where the Nile is held tightly between the surrounding desert - it was truly beautiful and even now one could capture echoes of the past!

And while it was only in the last couple of days of our trip that we did something about seeing something of the HORSES of Egypt - we did manage to visit both the significant AL BADEIA stud of Nasr Marei, as well as the state stud EL ZAHRAA in Cairo.

At Al Badeia, in the shadow of the Great pyramids, we met Nasr Marei and were introduced to some of the foremost members of the Arabian breed in the country. We saw some really lovely, top quality Arabians. One of these - the stallion Farid al Badeia is a horse I will always remember as a true classic example of the breed.  Many of the Al Badeia mares were outstanding, and reflected excellent breeding foresight. Their strong bodies with good legs and size were impressive - but these mares also possessed lovely classic heads and real quality!

Later through the courtesy of Nasr we were given a tour of El Zahraa - where once again I was very pleasantly surprised by the depth of quality and type  in the stock. I came too El Zahraa expecting to find something quite different to the strong boned, athletic and good sized stock the stud is made up of. We saw some really lovely mares - and equally promising foals on them as well.  Once again I was surprised here by the good bone and solid bodies of the stock.  The stallions we saw were an interesting and quite varied lot with a great depth of type and strengths, and a broad base of genetic material - which is maintained for the future. It was a fantastic experience seeing so many of those Straight Egyptian bloodlines at the source.

We flew home from Cairo with some very special memories of a country and a people and their horses - and a renewed interest in those bloodlines! For while our stud is based on the Hanstead / Crabbet bloodlines of the Bostocks stud - it also contains strong Egyptian elements through the imported sires AK JABAL IBN MONIET, IBN ANTAR & FALL FARM DESERT ASAHM. With daughters of these 3 sires still gracing our pastures and breeding our future generations it was not difficult to explore the prospect of adding more Egyptian blood to our herd.

AND with memories of Egypt still firmly entrenched in my mind while re-newing the search for suitable Egyptian blood stallions to use over our existing mares - I unexpectedly came across an extremely well bred Straight Egyptian mare for sale named as it happened - PRINCESS OF THE NILE .........it seemed like an omen!

NILE NEFERAMALA as a foal

PRINCESS OF THE NILE

(Imperial Maakir* ex The Nile Rose* - by The Minstril)
KUHAYLAH RODANIEH
Tail Female: RODANIA DB

A tall grey (born black) mare - PRINCESS is typical of her Kuhaylan strain. She is well over 15 hands and is a leggy mare with a very deep girth and great lung capacity. She has a good set of legs under her and good sound feet. Her other strengths are a fine light neck with good set and length, an excellent wither and strong back and a good strong hindquarter. She is a quality, refined mare, and possessed of a good head and body. Her bloodlines are some of the most popular in the word today.

PRINCESS OF THE NILE descends from the successful sire line of NAZEER through his celebrated son MORAFIC - although through the European branch of that family which descends through Morafic's son MADKOUR. In fact Princess has 18 crosses too Nazeer in her pedigree - through some of his most influential sons such as MORAFIC, HADBAN ENZAHI, GALAL, GHAZAL, ALAA EL DIN, and of course the wonderful RAMSES FAYEK - as well as two influential daughters in the mares BINT MAISA EL SAGHIRA and MAMLOUKA. In fact Nazeer comprises over 28% of the blood of Princess of the Nile!

Her sire is the big grey import - IMPERIAL MAAKIR. Tall, athletic and powerful with a huge hindquarter and dynamic ground covering stride - he was possessed of great presence and substance and not only produced A CLASS halter champions but some excellent endurance competitors as well.

The dam of PRINCESS OF THE NILE is the beautiful black imported mare THE NILE ROSE*.  A top quality mare of beautiful type this mare has produced some excellent progeny including an outstanding son in Belbowrie Obsidian (full brother to Princess of the Nile) who was exported to the Middle East where he is producing some excellent stock. The Nile Rose was sired by the one of the most acclaimed Straight Egyptians of the modern era - THE MINSTRIL who has been not only a great individual but also an outstanding sire as well. Internationally the daughters and granddaughters of The Minstril are highly sought after in the breed for their ability to consistently produce beauty and refinement.

Princess of the Nile is a maternal granddaughter of the prolific broodmare BELBOWRIE FAYEKA - Fayeka sired by the Nazeer son Ramses Fayek. A stallion perhaps noted more for his lovely conformation and correctness than great type FAYEK was an excellent individual to base a performance orientated breeding program on. His strength of body and excellent shoulder and hindquarter with great substance meant he produced some outstanding individuals in his breeding career and in particular a wonderful line of broodmares.

The tail female line of this mare is one we have long admired in the breed - albeit through her CRABBET connection! For Princess of the Nile is a direct tail female descendant of the wonderful mare RODANIA.  This line is celebrated in Crabbet breeding as being a successful sire producing strain. The mare BINT RIYALA - great grand daughter of RODANIA forms her dam line - being one of the mares selected by the RAS from Crabbet Park and imported to Cairo to augment their initial breeding nucleus.  The EAO bred mare ANHAR was selected and imported from Cairo too the USA and Australia where she was bred to a variety of SE sires to found a successful line - her progeny continue to produce quality SE stock in a variety of breeding lines.

For the stud Princess has produced some lovely stock. her first foal for us a lovely colt by Tarong Shahgar has made his mark in endurance before being exported to compete overseas. Her lovely daughter by Arundel House Ramses - Nile Nefermoun was tragically lost with her first foaling.

Bred twice to Rianda's el Nasra she produced two lovely daughters. The first a black/grey Nile Neferzuhri (pending) and the second - a black - Nile Neferamala (pending).

Bred to Sundance KA Princess has produced two promising colts. The latest of which shows some excellent potential as a future sire.

KUHAYLAH RODANIEH
Tail Female: RODANIA DB
From the second daughter of The Nile Rose that we acquired - this filly has been retained to continue that female line within the stud. Her dam Belbowrie Memory's Rose was an exceptional moving mare and this youngster has inherited her dams action.

Sired by TARONG SHAHGAR that flamboyant moving son of the legendary black SE sire Sirhalima - and out of the beautiful black import The Nile Rose Memory brought bloodlines we knew and were familiar with and the additional depth of breeding the success of her sire's combination of Ansata Ibn Halima and blood of Sameh through Shareefa.

A lovely bodied filly, with a good top line and girth - Memasra is a nice sized filly with good legs and feet and terrific action - showing a good free ground covering stride, tracking straight and true. Although only a youngster she is  an elegant type and she shows promise of maturing into a truly lovely bodied mare with a light, fine neck with lovely throat and refined breedy head.
